This volume brings together two later works by Louis de Broglie, one of the founders of quantum mechanics, in new English editions. In The Thermodynamics of the Isolated Particle, written as his final course at the Institut Henri Poincare, de Broglie extends his causal reinterpretation of wave mechanics into a full statistical thermodynamics of the individual quantum particle. In the earlier pamphlet A New Conception of Light, he attempts a relativistic, wave-mechanical theory of the photon by treating it as a bound pair of Dirac corpuscles. Together, the two works show a founder of quantum theory pursuing, decades apart, the same conviction: that the wave accompanying a particle is a physical reality, not merely a tool for calculating probabilities.
